230627 Batehaven to Eden
The last couple of days have been spent on the road, after all this is a road trip. There is a serendipitous joy in kicking off the main highways and travelling the quieter backroads from time to time. We set off from Batehaven after a quick stroll along Corrigans Beach, watching a couple of canoodling corellas on the way, for a 3.5 hour drive to the town of Eden, still in New South Wales but getting closer to Victoria. On the way, we came across the small town of Bodalla (pop 739). The first thing we saw was a very attractive Church which demanded a stop to look closer. All Saints Anglican Church was built between 1880 and 1901 and houses the last of 7 Henry Willis & Sons organs, imported from London. Next door was the Bodalla Cheese Shed, where we sampled locally produced cheese, milkshakes, and Ice cream, all of it insanely delicious (ever had smoked Ice cream? You should). Suitably refreshed, we continued our journey, stopping briefly at Cuttagee Beach, one of many picturesque spots we passed on the way, before arriving in Eden. A relatively large town with a population of 3,348 people, Wikipedia describes it as being built on undulating land. Translated to Dubb-speak, it has lots of bloody steep hills!
